About me

Who are you and where are you from?

I’m Bethan John, Deputy Interiors Editor at Ideal Home magazine. Born and raised in rural Somerset, I now live in a small but perfectly formed Victorian apartment in leafy South East London.

What’s the best thing about your job?

For an interiors obsessive, being paid to visit some of Britain’s most inspiring and beautiful homes is the best job in the world!

And the worst?

Trying to cram myself, my styling bag and more flowers than I can carry onto the tube at 6am on the way to shoots. And trying to make a house look like it’s photographed in high summer in December when it’s pitch dark at 3pm!

Describe your perfect room in five words

Sunny, characterful, restful, eclectic and grey

What’s your decorating secret

I’m a strong believer in buying things you love and finding a way to make them work afterwards! There’s no secret – just trust your instincts and have fun

If you weren’t an interiors journalist, what would you be?

I’d have my own shop selling vintage homewares bought in French flea markets and auctions… with a little haberdashery department, tea shop and florist on the side!
